Hampton Roads Writers Conference

The 16th annual Hampton Roads Writers Conference was held from November 7 to November 9 at the Holiday Inn Virginia Beach Norfolk Hotel and Conference Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The conference featured agent pitch sessions, critique sessions, and craft and publishing classes for poets, fiction writers, and nonfiction writers. Participating writers included poets Henry Hart and Kathy Smaltz; fiction writers Jody Hobbs Hesler, BettyJoyce Nash, and A.D. Nauman; and nonfiction writers Kate Lewis and Kyle Marie McMahon.

Inkubator Writing Conference

The tenth annual Inkubator Writing Conference, sponsored by Literary Cleveland, was held on September 20 and September 21 at the Cleveland Public Library in downtown Cleveland. The conference featured workshops, craft talks, panel discussions, and readings for poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers to help “empower writers, celebrate literary excellence, and amplify diverse voices.” The 2024 theme was “Create Dangerously.” Participating writers included poet Yalie Saweda Kamara, fiction writers Peter Ho Davies and Madeline ffitch, and nonfiction writer Loung Ung.

Broadleaf Writers Conference

The ninth annual Broadleaf Writers Conference was held on September 21 and September 22 at the Decatur Library in Decatur, Georgia. Texas Book Festival

The 2024 Texas Book Festival was held on November 16 and November 17 in downtown Austin. The festival featured panels and discussions with more than 250 authors and hosts nearly 100 exhibitions from magazines, presses, and other literary organizations. Participating writers included poet and nonfiction writer KB Brookins, fiction writer Rachel Khong, fiction and nonfiction writer Danzy Senna, and nonfiction writers Xochitl Gonzalez, Megan Kimble, and Sarah Smarsh. Most of the festival’s events were free and open to the public; the cost of tickets for select events ranged from $30 to $40.

Djerassi Resident Artists Program

The Djerassi Resident Artists Program offers monthlong residencies from February through November to poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators on a 583-acre ranch in the Santa Cruz Mountains, approximately 37 miles south of San Francisco. Residents are provided with lodging, meals, and studio space. To apply for residencies in 2025, writers submitted up to 10 pages of poetry (excerpts of a longer poem are accepted) or no more than 30 pages of prose and a curriculum vitae with a $40 application fee by October 1.

Cullman Center Fellowships

Fifteen fellowships are given annually to artists, academics, and creative writers, including poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators, whose work will benefit directly from access to the research collections at the New York Public Library. The fellows each receive $85,000, an office at the Cullman Center for Scholars and Writers at the New York Public Library’s main branch in the Midtown neighborhood of Manhattan, and full access to the library’s collections from September 2025 through May 2026. Fellows will be required to work on their projects at the Cullman Center for the duration of the fellowship. Writers currently enrolled in a graduate degree-granting program are ineligible. Using only the online submission system, submit a writing sample of up to 4,500 words, a project proposal of no more than 1,500 words, a curriculum vitae, and three reference letters by September 27.
