In this event hosted by the Helen Zell Writers’ Program at the University of Michigan, poet and translator Sawako Nakayasu reads from her books Some Girls Walk Into the Country They Are From (Wave Books, 2020) and Pink Waves (Omnidawn, 2023), and talks about the creative repetition inherent to translation and her relationship to improvisational forms in music and dance.
The La Baldi Residency, sponsored by the arts collective Cultivate, will offer two-week and one-month residencies from April through October to poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators in apartments and a small terratetto house in the historic hilltop village of Montegiovi, Italy. Residents will stay in private lodging with a fully equipped kitchen, a bathroom, and an outside sitting area. Some lodging options include a study. Individual writers and collaborative teams may apply.

The 2025 AWP Conference and Bookfair was held from March 26 to March 29 at the Los Angeles Convention Center and also included a virtual component comprising prerecorded and live streamed events. The conference featured panel discussions, readings, discussion rooms, and a bookfair. Prior to March 25, the cost of the conference for in-person preregistration, including all virtual programming and content, was $375 for nonmembers, $255 for members, $105 for seniors, and $70 for students.

Good Contrivance Farm, an educational nonprofit, offers residencies of up to four weeks year-round to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers on a Victorian farm in Reisterstown, Maryland, located 24 miles north of Baltimore. Workshops and craft classes with visiting faculty are offered outdoors from May to September. The faculty includes poet and nonfiction writer Ross Gay, memoirist R. Eric Thomas, and publishing professional Jane Friedman (Jane Friedman Media).

Poetry by the Sea: A Global Conference was held from May 27 to May 30 at Mercy by the Sea, a retreat center and private beach in Madison, Connecticut. The conference featured workshops, seminars, readings, and panels. The faculty includes poets Chad Abushanab, Austin Allen, Melissa Balmain, Oliver de la Paz, Anna M. Evans, David Groff, Didi Jackson, Major Jackson, David M. Katz, Joshua Mehigan, and Clare Rossini. Participating publishing professionals include editors Jennifer Franklin (Hudson Valley Writers Center) and Allison Joseph (Crab Orchard Review).

The 23rd annual Poetry at Round Top Festival will be held from April 25 to April 27 at the Round Top Festival Institute campus in Round Top, Texas. The program features workshops, readings, craft talks, open mics, panel discussions, and manuscript consultations. The faculty includes poets Gabrielle Calvocoressi, Hayan Charara, Mark Doty, Amanda Johnston, Joan Logghe, Cecily Parks, and Kim Stafford. Poets Katie Dozier and Timothy Green will be the workshop leaders. The cost of the conference is $150 ($50 for students) or $75 to attend only Saturday programming.

The American University of Paris Summer Creative Writing Institute will offer workshops to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers from July 1 to July 23 on the university’s campus in the seventh arrondissement of Paris. The faculty includes poet and fiction writer Siân Melangell Dafydd; poet, fiction writer, and nonfiction writer Biswamit Dwibedy; poet and nonfiction writer Lisa Robertson; and fiction writer Amanda Dennis. The cost of tuition is €2,224 (approximately $2,289) for auditors or €4,448 (approximately $4,577) for transferable academic credit.

In a recent video, Maggie Millner, Yale Review senior editor and author of Couplets: A Love Story (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2023), speaks about her favorite love poems, including June Jordan’s short poem “Resolution #1,003,” which she says “illustrates the way that love between two people can inspire a politics, a kind of political vision.” Spend some time thinking about the relationships in your life and who might inspire in you a sort of political vision. Write a poem that captures how to “love who loves me” and “stay indifferent to indifference,” as Jordan writes in her poem. How might the circumstances, breadth, and boundaries of your adoration for someone be political?
