Headlands Center for the Arts

Headlands Center for the Arts offers four- to ten-week residencies from mid-March to mid-November to poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and graphic novelists at its retreat center in the coastal wilderness of the Marin Headlands outside San Francisco. Residents are provided with a private bedroom and work space in a shared house, round-trip airfare, four meals per week, and a $1,000 monthly stipend. Writers not currently enrolled in an academic program are eligible.

Taos Writers Conference

The ninth annual Taos Writers Conference was held from July 25 to July 27 at Society of the Muse of the Southwest, a literary organization in Taos, New Mexico. The conference featured workshops for poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and writers working in hybrid genres, as well as critique sessions, faculty readings, and roundtable discussions with authors on publishing. The faculty included poets Aaron Abeyta, Holly Day, Veronica Golos, and Kyle Laws; fiction and nonfiction writers Sallie Bingham, E.J.

Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference

The 2025 Mendocino Coast Writers’ Conference was held from July 31 to August 2 on the Mendocino Coast in California. The conference featured workshops for poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers, as well as craft seminars, panels, one-on-one manuscript consultations, and open mics. The faculty included poets Linda Ravenswood and Brynn Saito; fiction writers Katya Apekina, James Bird, Tomas Moniz, Kimberly King Parsons, Allison Saft, and Rosiee Thor; and nonfiction writers Sarah Gerard and Greg Mania.

Vasto Arts Workshop

The 2025 Vasto Arts Workshop was held from September 6 to September 13 at the liberty-style Villa Monteferrante in the town of Vasto, Italy, which overlooks the Adriatic Sea. Programming included workshops, a guided tour of Vasto’s historic center, and visits to local artists’ studios for poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators. The faculty included poet and fiction writer Carolyn Marie Souaid and fiction writer and creative nonfiction writer Christopher DiRaddo.

PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grants

Ten grants of $4,000 each are given annually to support the translation of book-length works of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction that have not previously appeared in English or have appeared only in an “outdated or otherwise flawed translation.” A separate grant of $5,000, called the PEN Grant for the English Translation of Italian Literature, is also given to support the translation of a book of fiction or nonfiction from Italian into English. Manuscripts with up to two translators are accepted. Using only the online submission system, submit a translation sample of 8 to 10 pages of poetry or prose, a copy of the same passage in the original language, a biography and bibliography of the translated author, a project statement, and the curriculum vitae of the translator by June 1.
