Facts in 2007 Best-selling Memoir Challenged by Australian Newspaper
A newspaper in Australia recently published a report challenging the accuracy of A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier
(Sara Crichton Books, 2007), a debut book by Ishmael Beah that was
marketed in Starbucks and chosen as one of the best nonfiction books of
the year by Time magazine.

Günter Grass Files Lawsuit Against Publisher of Biography
Günter Grass recently filed a lawsuit against Random House, whose German imprint Goldmann Verlag released in October an updated version of Michael Juerg’s 2002 biography of the Nobel Prize winner, Guenter Grass.
James Frey Lawsuit Settled: Judge Orders 1,729 Refunds
On Friday, a federal court judge in New York City approved a settlement
in the lawsuit brought against Random House by 1,729 readers who bought
James Frey's controversial memoir A Million Little Pieces. Those readers, all of whom bought the book before
January 26, 2006, the day the author and his publisher acknowledged
that parts of the book are fictional, will receive a refund. The
settlement will cost Random House $27,348 in refunds as well as over $1
million in legal expenses. The settlement also calls for the publisher
to donate a total of $180,000 to the American Red Cross, the Hazeldon
addiction treatment center, and First Book.
Editors Who Can Handle the Truth
The release of three anthologies of creative nonfiction (or literary nonfiction or narrative nonfiction or whatever you choose to call it) proves that while difficult to label, there’s little challenge finding representative work for the so-called fourth genre.

Turcotte Family Settles With Burroughs, St. Martin's in Running With Scissors Suit
On Wednesday, the family portrayed in Augusten Burroughs’s book Running With Scissors settled their lawsuit against the author and his publisher. The Turcotte family, with whom Burroughs lived as a teenager, filed suit two years ago seeking over $2 million in damages for defamation.
