“Strong Words for a Polite Nation” subTerrain Magazine was founded in 1988 to publish writers from the other side of the tracks. Each issue features progressive and sometimes controversial writing, alongside timely book reviews and contemporary visual art. Praised by both writers and readers for featuring work that might not find a home in more conservative periodicals, subTerrain seeks to expand the definition of literary and artistic culture by showcasing the best in progressive writing and ideas.
Please DON'T send us formulaic genre fiction (eg. Romance, Mystery, Sci-fi etc.)
Please DO read a copy of the magazine. If you can't find one on the newsstand, we will send you a copy for $5 (and we pay the postage!).
Please DO read our Writer's Guidelines before submitting (at www.subterrain.ca).
We now accept electronic submissions via Submittable (we do NOT accept emailed submissions). Electronic submissions are charged a $3 fee to help pay for our Submittable account and thereby allow us to continue accepting electronic submissions; mailed submissions come with no charge (though you will have to pay for postage).
This is a publication that plans to blur the lines of traditional poetry. Too many publications have a narrow definition of what poetry is or what it should be. We don't. In fact, we treasure poetry that strays from the path. We want raw, evocative, emotional poetry. We love imagery. While we don't traditionally like rhymes, we are not opposed to them if they are done well. We love the free verse; we also love the aubade. The form is up to you.
We do not want: Nature Poems Religious Poems Boring Poems Instead, please send us: Trash Poetry Nerdy Poetry Horror Poetry For more on what we're looking for, please review one or two of our back issues. We ONLY accept online submissions. Please no postal mail.
Due to the format of our publication, we do not take long line or prose poems.
Versal, the literary & arts journal out of Amsterdam, seeks work that is urgent, involved, and unexpected. A publication celebrating translocal intersections and cross-cultural dialogue, Versal is internationally renowned for the quality of work published by up-and-coming as well as established writers, and for its strong attention to design and production values. Versal has been featured many times in Poets & Writers Magazine, including being named among the "top indie innovators" (November/December 2010).
We especially encourage works from outside of the US, works that blend genre, works in translation, works from writers and artists of color, works from writers and artists with disabilities, and works from writers and artists of marginalized orientations, backgrounds, and gender identities.
