Author's Bio

I am a fiction writer who teaches creative writing at Wayne State University and at the College for Creative Studies. I have won the Red Rock Review Mark Twain Award for Short Fiction, the New Millennium’s Fiction Award and the Chicago Tribune Nelson Algren Award. I have also won the international Bridport Prize and am the recipient of a creative writing fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. My short stories have appeared in the Connecticut Review, Clackamas Literary Review, the Chicago Tribune, the Montreal Review, New Millennium Writings, Cimarron Review, Detroit Noir and others. Voices of the Lost and Found, my first full-length short fiction collection, won the USA Best Books Award in Fiction. I am currently writing a novel featuring fossil hunters in Ethiopia.
