 “Getting to Know Your Characters”

If you're new to writing, returning to writing or just need to stretch your writing muscles in the company of fellow writers, this might be the workshop for you. Each session will include timed writing activities and the chance to share what you've written during the session. $250 for six-week workshop, includes final critique of up to 10 pages by the workshop leader. Limited to 9 participants. (Note: No session on Memorial Day, 5/25/20)

Seven-week workshop to develop character, plot, and dialogue for your fiction and non-fiction stories. Good for beginner writers, writers looking to expand their craft, and those returning to writing and the workshop setting.

What and where is story? Margaret Atwood writes, “Going into narrative is a dark road.” We will find our way into the dark, into the unconscious and bring our stories out into the light. Looking at examples from Orhan Pamuk, Toni Morrison,  and Terry Tempest Williams, we will craft our stories into journal entries, personal essays, short stories, poems. Our voices will bear witness in our turbulent times.

Workshop Objective: To straddle the line between poetry & prose, essay & narrative, list & analysis. I’d like to think of the hybrid form as a map, an itinerary, an index, a choreographed movement that allows one to move between text & context, past & present, meaning & making—& moreover, the moment of making. On the fly. In this one-day workshop, we’ll learn to embody the liminal hybrid form by embracing our own liminal, intertextual, fluid, often performative, identities.

Join us this winter for a 6-week intensive course on breaking into the food writing world led by veteran food writer and editor Devra Ferst.

We’ll cover matching the tone of a publication, honing the angle of a story, and pitching. Plus, writing functional yet entertaining recipe headnotes, concise and smart maps and guidebook entries, and more styles of writing that will help you get your byline out there.

Plausible magic is a technique that suggests an unbelievable—and often surreal—scenario can arise from “believable” character action and reasonable narrative means. Plausible magic is ordinary life rendered strange through the strength of the author’s vision. In this course, students will read and discuss the wonderfully bizarre stories of Alexandra Kleeman, Donald Antrim, Camille Bordas, Joy Williams, and more.
