Editorial Focus
Fourth Genre is devoted to publishing notable, innovative work in literary (creative) nonfiction, and the editors are especially looking to provide space to voices less seldom heard from in literary publications. The journal pays a $50 honorarium per published essay, and for each essay that makes it past our initial screeners but is ultimately rejected, we offer written feedback.
Tips From the Editor
Please write for sample back issues (or check out samples on our website) in order to become familiar with the journal. We accept only previously unpublished work. We think of the genre as flexible, fluid, and expansive, and so we’re looking for essays in any variety—lyrical, familiar, personal, nature, environmental, travel, and especially graphic. We're particularly interested in idea-driven essays whether narrative or meditative. Tell us a good story, but seed that story with ideas. Engage in some deep meditation, but ground that meditation in people and stories and things. Bring the mind to life. Bring life to the mind.
