San Diego Writers, Ink is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They offer classes, groups, workshops, readings and other literary events at The Ink Spot and other locations throughout San Diego County. Some of their monthly literary events including Friday Night Liberty Open House, San Diego Memoir Association Meet-Up, Dime Stories: Open Mic Prose Nights, Sunday Author Series, and more.
Founded in the early 1970s, the Nuyorican Poets Cafe began as a living room salon in the East Village apartment of writer and poet Miguel Algarin. Today, the cafe is a nonprofit organization that provides a forum for innovative poetry, music, hip hop, video, visual arts, comedy, and theatre from underrepresented artists. Programming includes poetry and prose readings, theatrical and musical performances, and visual art exhibits. The cafe is well-known for a popular weekly Poetry Slam judged by randomly selected audience members.
University of Houston’s MFA Creative Writing program hosts poetry nights, several reading series, and various literary readings by faculty, students, and visiting writers, including the Poetry & Prose, a reading series featuring UH faculty, students, alumni, and other well-known writers, that happens right on campus. Through cultural partnerships, they also sponsor various literary events throughout the city of Houston, including the Inprint Margarett Root Brown Reading Series, Brazos Bookstore Presents, and more.
The Columbia University School of the Arts Writing Program is highly regarded for its rigorous approach to literary instruction and for its faculty of acclaimed writers and editors who are devoted and dedicated teachers. The faculty, the students, and the curriculum represent and foster a full range of artistic and literary diversity. The department also presents several stimulating events, readings, and conversations throughout the year, including the Creative Writing Lecture Series, Nonfiction Dialogues, Poetry Reading Series, and Literary Translation at Columbia.
Since first opening their doors in 1873, the Chicago Public Library has served all Chicagoans with free and open places to gather, learn, connect, read and be transformed. It welcomes and supports all people in their enjoyment of reading and lifelong learning. Working together, they strive to provide equal access to information, ideas and knowledge through books, programs and other resources. They believe in the freedom to read, to learn, to discover. Events include author readings and talks.
The Countee Cullen Branch gives Harlem residents of all ages access to library services delivered in a friendly and effective manner. It is home to the James Weldon Johnson Reference Collection for children, books on the African-American experience, a reference collection including college catalogs and financial aid information, and the African-American/Black Culture reference collection.
With nine locations, Busboys and Poets is proud to be a venue that provides space and support for poets and spoken word performers and interested audiences. From the cozy atmosphere of the “Sunday Kind of Love” poetry series to the high intensity of the 11th Hour Poetry Slam, you will find a poetry event that will spark your creative side and leave you inspired. They have hosted several world renowned poets for readings, including Amiri Baraka, Nikki Giovanni, Alice Walker, Suheir Hammad, Rita Dove, Sonia Sanchez, Elizabeth Alexander and Denis Brutus.
Established in 2001, Apache XLR is a cafe/bar, gallery, and live music and performance venue that hosts frequent art shows, music, and spoken word events throughout the year.
The Twig Book Shop began its evolution in 1972. Currently located at the former Pearl Brewery on the Museum Reach of the Riverwalk, The Twig provides newly released books for children and adults as well as award-winning classics. The space at Pearl has become a venue for local and national poets and authors. The Twig makes books available for book clubs, schools, and conferences. The Texana collection makes the Twig a destination for history lovers near and far.
Charis Books and More is an independent feminist bookstore in Atlanta, Georgia. They specialize in diverse and unique children's books, feminist and cultural studies books, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer fiction and nonfiction. They host frequent readings, community events and meetings, classes and workshops, presentations and panels, and literary events throughout the year.
The Cliterati Open No-Mic open mic & reading series is on the third Thursday of every month.
