Third Place Books hosts over one thousand free public events every year. The bookstore has a large public commons, five restaurants, free wireless internet, a community room, and a stage.
Events and the public area within Third Place Books are managed by a community organization, Friends of Third Place Commons, and supported by Third Place Books, the City of Lake Forest Park, and the merchants and management of the Town Center at Lake Forest Park.

The Boston University Creative Writing Program, one of the oldest and most prestigious in the country, hosts many readings by faculty, students, and visiting writers, as well as lectures, talks, and panel discussions throughout the school year.

Open Books at the Literacenter features more than fifty thousand books in dozens of genres, a dedicated youth section, comfy lounges, and more, all to support their literacy programs in Chicago. With a full calendar of literary events, Open Books hosts poetry readings, talks, and book signings.

Formerly known as DIESEL, A Bookstore, the space has transformed into East Bay Booksellers. Still a neighborhood bookstore, the shop was created to provide a place for creating and maintaining community in an atmosphere that promotes the free, mutually-supportive exchange of ideas and experiences. With a wide selection of books and events, East Bay Booksellers is a cultural center that aims to support the literary community.

The Writing Department at Loyola, apart from offering one of the very few undergraduate writing majors in the country, also hosts various reading events that are open to the public, including the Writers at Work Reading Series and the Modern Masters Reading Series.

The Green Lake Branch of the Seattle Public Library holds frequent book group meetings, reading clubs, author readings, children’s storytime hours, and other events throughout the year.

Through its live programming, workshops, publications, website, and special events, The Poetry Project promotes, fosters, and inspires the reading and writing of contemporary poetry by presenting contemporary poetry to diverse audiences; increasing public recognition, awareness, and appreciation of poetry and other arts; providing a community setting in which poets and artists can exchange ideas and information; and encouraging the participation and development of new poets from a broad range of styles.

University of Massachusetts Boston’s Creative Writing Department hosts occasional readings, lectures, and panel discussions by faculty, students, and visiting writers throughout the year, including the Global Voices Reading Series. Most events are free and open to the public, but some are ticketed events.
