Grassrootz Books and Juice Bar

Grassrootz Books and Juice Bar is an independent bookstore specializing in African American literature, history, and culture. Inside the bookstore is a juice bar and coffee shop as well as a workspace for the community. Grassrootz has an in-store community library with flexible extensions and the ability to borrow a book for thirty days for only five dollars. Books of all kinds and conditions are also accepted for donation. The shop hosts book signings and other events, and is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12:00 PM to 7:00 PM and Sundays from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM. 

Blue & Grey Book Shoppe

The Blue & Grey Book Shoppe is an independent bookstore located in Independence, Missouri. The store carries an expanded inventory of new, used, and rare books about the Civil War, local history, and other American history books. Visitors can also purchase maps, gift items, art, and more. The shop is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM.

Codex

Codex is an independent bookstore located in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan. Opened in January 2018, Codex sells new and gently used books with a focus on literary fiction, art, cinema, and philosophy. The shop also hosts book releases and readings. Open seven days a week from 12:00 PM to 10:00 PM, Codex buys gently used books and has a charming cart with $1 books along the sidewalk.

Wise Blood Booksellers

Located inside of a record store, Wise Blood Booksellers is an independent bookstore offering both new and used books for sale. The shop hosts events on occasion and is open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM and Sunday from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM. 

BLK + BRWN.

BLK + BRWN. is a woman-owned, independent bookstore in Midtown Kansas City, Missouri, which opened on Juneteenth in 2021 in an effort to uplift and amplify Black voices and offer a space for the Black and Brown community. The shop uses technology to its advantage, placing unique QR codes on various books that link a reader to an experience that is paired to the book, including speeches by Black activists and wine suggestions from Black sommeliers. BLK + BRWN. has its own podcast and hosts frequent events including book club meetings, author talks, and book signings.

Community Bookstore: Park Slope

Community Bookstore is an independent bookstore that has served the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, since its establishment in 1971. They are known for their well-curated shelves, garden, and local bookstore cat. The store also hosts monthly events, including readings and panels. 

Shakespeare & Co. Booksellers: Broadway

Shakespeare & Co. is an independent bookstore located in the Upper West Side neighborhood of Manhattan. The store hosts a plethora of events including book signings, readings, talks, monthly book club meetings, and open mic nights for comics, poets, and musicians. Their flagship shop is located in the Upper East Side on Lexington Avenue.
