The Owen Wister Review is the University of Wyoming’s Arts and Literary Journal produced through the Student Media department. The editorial staff is comprised entirely of undergraduate and graduate students who have nuanced yet supportive tastes in art and writing and strive to publish the best quality creative non-fiction, poetry, fiction, and art submitted from both emerging and established authors and artists. We encourage work that challenges itself, that is naturally surprising.

While we have strong roots in promoting western-themed writing, we do not make it our primary focus. We encourage submissions of quality work regardless of theme or location. Please read our submission guidelines before submitting, and please do give us plenty of notice if you are submitting simultaneously. Since we publish only unpublished work, we do need to know if the piece is accepted elsewhere. We highly recommend submitting online for these reasons. Thank you!

Creative Nonfiction draws heavily from unsolicited submissions. Our editors believe that providing a platform for emerging writers and helping them find readers is an essential role of literary magazines, and it’s been our privilege to work with many fine writers early in their careers. A typical issue of CNF contains at least one essay by a previously unpublished writer. We’re open to all types of creative nonfiction, from immersion reportage to personal essay to memoir.

Please do send work that blends style with substance, and reaches beyond the personal to tell us something new about the world. We're drawn to stories that balance a strong narrative (i.e. something happens) with a teaching or reflective element (i.e. the something that happens matters for some reason). Please do include your complete contact information and keep us informed of the status of simultaneous submissions. Please don't send poetry.

New Rivers Press is interested in literary work of every character, but especially in diverse work that's aesthetically challenging and has a social conscience. Our Many Voices Project competition (Sept. 15 - Nov. 1) seeks the best new literary prose and poetry from new and emerging writers. Our Electronic Book Series (July 1 – Sept. 1) seeks manuscripts in popular fiction genres. During open submissions (May), we are interested in reading the best work from writers in all stages of their careers. Founded in New York in 1968, the not-for-profit Press has now published over 330 books.

Make sure to send mss. to the appropriate competition (MVP, Electronic Book Series, American Fiction) and to check deadlines and guidelines. We read general submissions in May and June.

Elizabeth Searle, Clint McCown, Michael Hettich, Ed Bok Lee, Chris Belden, Debra Marquart, David Haynes, Jim Sallis, Heid Erdrich.
