The program offers full funding to all incoming students through teaching assistantships, full tuition and fees remission, and fellowships. Teaching load is 1/1.
In addition, the program emphasizes and offers a variety of non-teaching graduate assistantships, including editorial positions with Gulf Coast, lyric narrative health fellowships with the UH Medical School, and internships with outside organizations ranging from independent bookstores to advertising companies to literary nonprofits and presses.
The program is affiliated with several major reading series, including the Inprint Margaret Root Brown reading series, the Gulf Coast reading series, and the Poison Pen series, as well as the local Writers in the Schools (WITS) program.
It offers over $50,000 in annual graduate writing awards, as well as research fellowships to underwrite residencies, travel funds for the annual AWP Conference and reserved summer literary residencies, and some summer thesis and dissertation research fellowships.
