Author's Bio

I wrote my first poems as a class assignment in second grade. For fun, I entered one of those poems, unedited, in a recent local poetry contest. It won Third Place. The poem was still alive, just as it was originally conceived and written in a child's cursive script, decades earlier. It's natural to think of poetry as being alive when we read works of well-known poets, from Dickinson to Merwin to Rich, and an entire newer generation. For me, the proof coming in this small dose, largely unwitnessed, was a meaningful confirmation--one that holds true for every writer, every poet. Through expression and form, we create meaning, and it lives on.
