Author's Bio

I am a Seattle-based  writer, poet, and independent teacher of writing. I grew up on a dairy farm on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. My latest book is Holy Magic: Poems (MoonPath Press, 2020). I am author of The Writer's Portable Mentor: A Guide to Art, Craft, and the Writing Life, 2nd Edition (University of New Mexico Press, 2018); a book of creative nonfictions titled Fire and Stone: Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? (University of Georgia Press, 2016); Minding the Muse: A Handbook for Painters, Composers, Writers, and Other Creators (Coffeetown Press, 2016); Crossing Over: Poems (University of New Mexico Press, 2015); The Writer’s Portable Mentor 1st Edition (Wallingford Press, 2010); and Where the Sun Never Shines: A History of America’s Bloody Coal Industry (Paragon House Publishers, 1989).
