Author's Bio

Katerina Stoykova is the author of several award-winning poetry books in English and Bulgarian, as well as the Senior Editor of Accents Publishing. Her latest book, Second Skin (ICU, 2018, Bulgarian) received the Vanya Konstantinova biannual national poetry award, as well as a grant from the European Commission's program Creative Europe for translation and publication in English. Katerina acted in the lead roles for the independent feature films Proud Citizen and Fort Maria, both directed by Thom Southerland. Her poems have been translated into German, Spanish, Ukrainian, Bangla, Farsi, and a volume of her selected poems, translated into Arabic by acclaimed poet Khairi Hamdan, was published in Arabic from Dar Al Biruni press in 2022.

  • “Pencho’s Oak” award for literary contribution to contemporary Bulgarian culture for The Air Around the Butterfly (2009, Fakel Express, Bilingual)
  • Ivan Nikolov National Poetry Award for best Bulgarian poetry book for 2014 for How God Punishes (2014, ICU, Bulgarian)
  • “Creative Europe” grant from the European Commission's program "Creative Europe" to be translated and published in English for Second Skin (2018, ICU, Bulgarian)
  • “Vanya Konstantinova” poetry award for Second Skin (2018, ICU, Bulgarian)
  • The world premiere of the English-language edition of Second Skin (2019, ICU, English) took place at the Bulgarian Embassy in London, England
  • The Season of Delicate Hunger: Anthology of Contemporary Bulgarian Poetry (2014, Accents Publishing) had a special event in the Bulgarian Embassy in Washington DC where the translated poems were performed by actors and musicians
  • A quote from Bird on a Window Sill (2017, Publishing House Signs, Bilingual) was used as a theme for Australian Catholic University 2020 ACU Prize for Poetry
  • Recipient of the 2010 Eileen Egan Graduate Student Leadership Award given yearly to a Spalding University Alumni
