Emerson College’s Department of Writing, Literature, and Publishing hosts two reading series, the WLP Reading Series and the Faculty/Alumni Reading Series. Both are free and open to the public.
The Department of Writing, Literature, and Publishing collaborates with other academic departments and student organizations to bring renowned publishers, writers, and scholars to Emerson College.
The 1,100-seat Cullen Theater hosts smaller opera and ballet productions and serves as the venue for the Inprint Margarett Root Brown Reading Series, a nationally-renowned series that has featured more than 300 of the world’s most accomplished literary writers. Its intimate size is ideal for solo artists, chamber music, and small touring shows and recitals.
Emerald Coast Writers, formerly known as the West Florida Literary Federation, brings together writers and area residents who are interested in writing and the literary heritage of West Florida. They offer and host educational programs, writing workshops, readings, community programs, school poetry competitions, awards, critique sessions, open mics every third Tuesday of the month, and related activities for members and the public. They also sponsor an annual student poetry writing contest, publish an anthology biannually, and maintain the Dr. Francis P.
The Central Library branch of the Seattle Public Library regularly hosts lectures, author readings and signings, book clubs, discussion groups, presentations and panels, storytime for grown-ups, reading series, and more.
The University of Chicago’s Program in Creative Writing has been proud to host readings and lectures by writers including Daniel Alarcón, Charles D’Ambrosio, Lydia Davis, Karen Russell, Zadie Smith, Nick Laird, and many others.
Moreover, their Program in Poetry and Poetics hosts the Poem Present Reading and Lecture Series as well as the annual Pearl Andelson Sherry Memorial Poetry Reading and Lecture. All events are free and open to the public unless noted otherwise.
The Lawndale Art Center is located within the Houston Museum District and the Midtown Cultural Arts and Entertainment District, and hosts art exhibits, musical performances, and literary discussions and readings including the Gulf Coast Reading series. The series presents readings from University of Houston Creative Writing Program graduate students and contributors to Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature and Fine Arts. The monthly series supports the journal’s mission to spotlight the work of both esteemed and emerging writers with voices as diverse as the Gulf itself.
Founded in the Ravenna neighborhood of Seattle in 2002, Third Place Books is a general interest bookstore with over forty thousand books.
The Ravenna location has Vios Cafe, a full-service sit-down Greek restaurant located at the back of the bookstore. Third Place Pub is located below Vios Café and the bookstore. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the bookstore, café, and pub. The bookstore hosts readings, discussions, signings, and other literary events throughout the year.
The newly-formed Center for Brooklyn History (CBH) is an exciting collaboration between Brooklyn Historical Society and Brooklyn Public Library, combining materials collected over the past 157 years with BPL’s Brooklyn Collection and becoming the most expansive catalogue of Brooklyn history in the world.
The Green Lake Branch of the Seattle Public Library holds frequent book group meetings, reading clubs, author readings, children’s storytime hours, and other events throughout the year.
Each year, the Creative Writing MFA Program located in the University of Colorado Boulder’s Department of English hosts the Creative Writing Reading Series to bring innovative writers to the university for a free, on-campus reading. Past readers include National Book Award winner Terrance Hayes, Susan Steinberg, CAConrad, Ronaldo Wilson, Brian Evenson, Lynne Tillman, Claudia Rankine, M. NourbeSe Philip, and Pulitzer Prize winner Rae Armantrout.
