The Best American Essays 2026

This collection, from the series launched in 1986, features twenty essays offering “a snapshot of how 2025 was lived and how the authors of these works think about not only their lives but those of others,” writes Kim Dana Kupperman, series editor, in the foreward. Edited by M. Gessen, this edition’s subject matter ranges from the practice of the essay to illness, class divide, consciousness, and war with authors such as Hilton Als, Ben Lerner, Andrea Long Chu, Dawn Lundy Martin, Jia Tolentino, and Zadie Smith. Reflecting on this year’s selections and the art of essay writing, Gessen writes in the introduction: “It can take a long time to understand what you are seeing, to know how you know what you know, and to develop the tools to write what you know. As it turns out, that is what essayists do.”
