Around 35 grants of $25,000 each are given annually in alternating years to poets and prose writers to “enable the recipients to set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement.” Applications in prose will be accepted for 2023. Writers who are citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. and who have published at least five different short stories, works of short fiction, creative essays, or excerpts from larger works; a novel or novella; or a volume or collection of short fiction or creative nonfiction over the last seven years are eligible to apply. Using only the online submission system, submit a completed application, which includes a brief project description, 20 to 25 pages of a prose writing sample, and a list of publications by March 8.
