This program offers select scholarships. The MFA Residency Scholarship is a need-based scholarship and helps students attend required MFA residencies, which include immersive workshops, mentorship, and community-building experiences in the U.S. and abroad. Awards may cover all or a portion of residency fees.
The Jim Daniels MFA Writing Award is a merit-based award honors acclaimed writer and Alma alumnus Jim Daniels ’78. This $3,000 scholarship is awarded annually to a current MFA student demonstrating exceptional creative and critical work. Recipients will be selected by a rotating committee of three MFA faculty members—one representing each genre—who will nominate a student through an objective and nondiscriminatory process.
When a mentor or supervisor refers an applicant to the Alma College MFA in Creative Writing, they will receive a $2,000 scholarship.
Students can choose to study two genres over the course of two and a half years.
Summer residencies are located at Alma College in Michigan. Winter residencies rotate between domestic and international (Oxford, England and Venice, Italy) locations.
The deadline for the summer residency is May 30, and the winter residency deadline is November 30.
