The program offers merit and need-based awards.
The program offers coursework in picture books, early reader/chapter books, middle grade, young adult, graphic literature, nonfiction, fiction, and poetry for young people.
Students attend two nine-day residencies each year, in June and January. Concurrent fully virtual residencies are also offered. The on-campus residencies occur alongside the college’s other MFA programs, Writing, Graphic Design, Visual Art, Film, and Music Composition. With the college’s affiliation with CalArts, all residencies occur on the CalArts campus in Valencia, California.
The application for a January start is October 1. The application for a June start is April 1.
