Students attend back-to-back residencies each July: a week at the Fishtrap Gathering of Writers at Wallowa Lake near Joseph, Oregon, and a second week on the nearby Eastern Oregon University campus in La Grande, Oregon. The residencies offer workshops, seminars, and readings and conversations by faculty and visiting writers, student and graduate readings, and one-on-one faculty mentorship.

The program also offers a thematic course of study in its Landscape, Ecology, and Community concentration. Each student additionally completes a practicum or internship in editing and publishing, literary outreach, online teaching, or another self-directed topic.
