Fire and ICE: A Haibun Poetry Workshop

10/11/2025 - 11:00am to 1:00pm
Poetry
Workshop

How can a poem situate itself without being fully entrenched? How to make the reader travel without getting lost? Haibun, which consists of prose and a haiku, is a poetic form that allows one to answer some of these questions while providing a fresh perspective through a lens that focuses on nature and landscape.

Participants write a haibun reflecting on their feelings and experiences after the recent fires in Altadena and the Palisades or on the current ICE raids in Los Angeles.  Though the focus will be on these themes, participants could also write on other issues that are impacting them.

Workshop will be led by Teresa Mei Chuc, former Altadena Poet Laureate and author of three books, Invisible Lights (2018), Keeper of the Winds (2014) and Red Threat (2012.) Teresa has a Masters in Fine Arts in Creative Writing (Poetry) from Goddard College and is a public high English teacher in Los Angeles in her twenty-first year of teaching.
