Our mission is to make students better writers.
Prompt is the highest-rated and most-recommended college admissions essay coaching company. We're looking for part-time Writing Coaches to fill flexible, remote positions. We have a passion for a story well told, for growing our network of educators through paid training and ongoing mentor support, and for empowering our students to believe in their voices and strengthen their writing skills. Our Writing Coach community includes teachers, parents, grad students, artists, and freelancers across many industries with a passion for writing, education, and collaboration.

Note: Due to our audience and the specialized nature of our work, we cannot consider candidates without a completed bachelor’s degree. Please do not apply unless you have already graduated from an accredited college or university, or will graduate by June of 2025.
Employment Options to Fit Your Lifestyle
We offer flexible start dates between June and August, with coaching work available through the beginning of January. We provide three different employment options—each with an income guarantee that reflects hourly editing and coaching expectations. Click here for a breakdown of our Writing Coach employment options and earning projections.
Coaches work 5 days a week, but your daily routine, location, and how you divvy up your hours are all up to you! We have a few guidelines and caveats, mostly driven by college application deadlines, but overall, you are in charge of your schedule and are only responsible for completing essays assigned based on your employment option.
Meaningful Work
In addition to providing insightful and educational written feedback, the majority of our Writing Coaches brainstorm and strategize with students through one-on-one video calls. You will form constructive and impactful relationships with young writers at a pivotal time in their lives, refining their writing skills and helping them understand what makes them unique as individuals while envisioning their future as learners, community members, and leaders.
Note: We are currently only accepting applications from individuals willing and able to participate in one-on-one video calls with their students.
Professional Development
Prompt's Writing Coaches are the best admissions essay coaches in the world. This is not only because of our deliberate, curious, and highly-selective hiring process but also because we offer comprehensive and ongoing training. You’ll learn in community as well as through one-on-one coaching and collaborative instructional webinars.
Writing Coach Pay
Writing Coach hourly pay is $25 per hour for new coaches, with tenure-based raises after the first year.
-
Essay Reviews: Written feedback is paid on a per-essay basis; each essay has an established pay based on the estimated editing time—we use data from ten years of feedback to set these estimates.
-
For example, a first draft of a Common Application Personal Statement has an estimated editing time of 48 minutes, so a first-year coach would earn $20 (0.8 hours X $25 per hour).
-
-
Video Calls: Brainstorming and strategy video coaching sessions pay $40 per 50-minute call, taking into account the quick preparatory and follow-up work required.
-
Monthly Stipend: Determined by your employment option, our stipend covers non-editing work such as professional development and reading/responding to Slack messages or emails.
-
Paid Training: To provide the best essay coaching to our students, we provide extensive training on different essay types, instructional styles, and feedback approaches. Writing Coaches will receive bonuses during their initial training and probationary periods to compensate for the additional time spent reviewing our training. If invited to join our specialized networks, such as our Asia-Pacific networks, coaches may also receive bonuses for completing additional training.
-
Bonuses: During our peak times (e.g., October), you may be eligible for bonuses for meeting goals that go beyond your option level's hourly expectations. For coaches qualified to work in our Asia-Pacific networks, there is a 20% bonus on essay reviews.
A Look Into an Admissions Season with Prompt
At Prompt, we are dedicated to supporting and guiding our students through every step of their college essay journey. To provide timely and effective support for our students, we structure our year to mimic the seasonality of college admissions.
Our season officially begins on June 2, but most of our newest Writing Coaches will have start dates in July or August, depending on their availability and our capacity to onboard new coaches. New Writing Coaches will have a two-week probationary period, where they will work with our Coach Mentors to practice providing feedback on real student essays, learn our approach to different essay types, and gain familiarity with our platform and feedback processes.
After this probationary period, you will be eligible to be assigned students, begin working your full option hours, and receive instruction on how to join our specialized teams, such as our video coaching network. In addition, this is when you'll become eligible for our income guarantee program. You can read more about our different employment option levels and income guarantee here.
As we hit the fall, our season will only become more hectic! We will continue working with increasing numbers of students through August and September, and we hit the peak of our season in October, where we often provide feedback on over twice as many essays as the preceding months. We will continue to experience peaks in demand leading up to major admissions deadlines, including, but not limited to, November 1, November 30, and January 1-5. Our season officially ends on January 11, 2026.
During our off season (from mid-January through May), we continue to work with students in a limited capacity. Some of our Writing Coaches will continue to support our team, providing feedback on essays for transfer students, graduate applicants, or high school juniors eager to get a jump start on their essays. We also have some opportunities for our Writing Coaches to support other projects at Prompt, such as providing articles and content for our Writing Center, supporting our curriculum development, or tutoring students in academic subjects or test prep. Most of our Writing Coaches take a well-deserved break from college admissions work during these slower months, using this time to pursue goals and opportunities outside of Prompt, but over 85% of our Writing Coaches choose to return to Prompt year-after-year!
Note: This is seasonal but recurring work. Most of our students work with the same coach through the full application process, which allows our coaches to familiarize themselves with their students’ writing and learning styles and see their students grow over the course of the year. Because of the importance of this one-to-one teaching relationship, we are only able to accept applicants that can commit to working with Prompt through January 11, 2026.
Prompt’s Application and Paid Evaluation Process
Our initial application should take you about 30 minutes to complete.
-
In the application, applicants provide short feedback (6-8 sentences total) on a sample essay. We certainly don't expect you to nail our feedback approach! Instead, we are interested in observing your unique editing voice and content assessment insights.
-
There is an optional video component, which we strongly recommend completing as we use it to positively weigh applicants. You can use any recording app that allows you to save the file and upload it to our form.
Selected applicants will be sent a training course and a test essay to assess their understanding and application of the training course.
-
Our review will look at your content assessment, instructional approach, attention to detail, and overall tone & engagement. We provide guidance on all of these factors in the training course!
-
If we don't select you to continue in the evaluation process, we will pay you $40 for your time spent on this portion of the application.
Applicants selected to continue will be sent a second training course, constructive feedback on their first test essay, and another (final) test essay.
-
For this essay, we will look at the same framework outlined above, plus your ability to apply our feedback from the first test essay.
-
If you do not pass the second test essay, we will pay you $80 for your time spent on this portion of the application.
If you are invited to join our Writing Coach team and accept our offer letter, you'll be sent our onboarding materials, including guidance to activate your Prompt account, where your first payment —$100— will be waiting for you! This payment covers the application process and your Welcome Call.
Note: We pay applicants for their time spent completing our training courses and test essays. There is no fee or cost to the applicant at any point during the process. We do not compensate applicants who ask to be removed from consideration for employment or fail to submit a test essay within a reasonable amount of time.
Academic Tutoring & Additional Opportunities
In addition to Writing Coaching, we also have opportunities for applicants interested in academic tutoring, including SAT, ACT, and AP test prep, through one-on-one video tutoring sessions. In our application, there will be a space to indicate your interest in tutoring and to list the subjects you feel confident tutoring. If you are interested in tutoring with Prompt but would prefer not to be a Writing Coach, please reach out to Kristina Chun at kristina@myprompt.com for more information on potential opportunities.
