Position Overview
The Executive Director serves as the chief visionary, leader of the Pat Conroy Literary Center, guiding its mission to honor and advance Pat Conroy’s literary legacy through education, storytelling, and community engagement. In close partnership with the Board of Directors, the Executive Director shapes the Center’s strategic direction, expands its reach and relevance, and ensures its long-term sustainability and impact.
This is a highly hands-on leadership role in a small, dynamic organization—requiring a leader who can think strategically, inspire others, and translate vision into action.

Key ResponsibilitiesStrategic Leadership & Vision
- Set and articulate a clear, compelling vision for the Center’s future in partnership with the Board of Directors
- Lead strategic planning and identify opportunities for growth, innovation, and expanded impact
- Position the Center as a leading literary and cultural institution regionally and nationally
- Serve as the primary ambassador and thought leader for the organization
Operations & Program Execution
- Oversee daily operations, including staffing, budgeting, and administration
- Translate strategic priorities into effective programs and initiatives, including the annual literary festival and educational offerings
- Ensure excellence in program delivery, visitor experience, and community engagement
Fundraising & External Relations
- Partner with Board leadership and development efforts by supporting donor relationships and participating in key cultivation activities
- Serve as a compelling ambassador to donors, sponsors, and community stakeholders
- Contribute to a culture of philanthropy without primary responsibility for fundraising strategy or execution
Marketing & Communications
- Oversee marketing and outreach efforts to expand visibility and audience engagement
- Shape and amplify the Center’s voice and narrative across all platforms
- Strengthen the Center’s brand and regional/national presence
Team & Human Resources
- Supervise and support a small staff, fostering a positive and mission-driven work environment
- Build organizational capacity through effective delegation, mentorship, and volunteer engagement
- Manage basic HR functions with professionalism and care
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated leadership experience, ideally in a nonprofit, cultural, or educational organization
- Proven ability to think strategically and execute effectively
- Experience supporting fundraising and donor relations
- Background in literature, writing, publishing, or related fields, with connections in the literary community preferred
- Experience with marketing, communications, and public relations
- Working knowledge of HR practices and organizational management
