Seguinland Institute

Community Life Assistant (9-month position)

Weekend & Evening Community Life Assistant

Seguinland Institute | Georgetown, Maine
Dates: Sept 10, 2026 – June 10, 2027
Compensation: Free housing + $20/hr for specific tasks + trip stipends

Seguinland Institute is hiring 2 Community Life Assistants (CLAs) to join a team of 4 CLAs.

CLAs will support our immersive, nature-based Good Life Gap Year programs. Ideal candidates are community-minded, love the outdoors, enjoy working with college-aged students, and are excited about innovative models of higher education.

This part-time role is perfect for someone pursuing grad school or a creative project, and/or who has another weekday job.

CLAs live in free housing adjacent to campus in the beautiful Mill Island House and provide weekend outings, evening/weekend on-call coverage, and general support during and between programs.

The CLAs (affectionately known as “the CLA(w)s”) are a vital part of the Seguinland ecosystem.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead weekend student outings.
    • A CLA will lead a half day trip (with a second CLA) every other weekend (approximately 4-6 hours). Trips are planned by CLAs in consultation with senior staff. Trips may include: hiking, concerts, farmers markets, beach combing. We welcome CLA ideas!
    • Drive students in Institute vans (12 passenger and 15 passenger); prior experience preferred; training available.
  • Provide rotating on-call coverage:
    • Each CLA provides on-call coverage 1-2 weekday evenings/nights per week
      • In general, a CLA will be responsible for 1 weekday night per week; they will cover 2 nights in a week once every 4 weeks (rotating with other CLAs).
      • When a CLA is on-call, they are invited/required to attend student dinners in the cookhouse. It's always delicious! It's also an ideal time to get to know the students.
      • On occasion, the on-call CLA will be asked to do some small task related to that evening's proceedings: for example, if there is a film screening after dinner, the CLA might be asked to set up the screen.
      • CLAs also complete one stroll around campus as part of their evening on-call duty.
    • One weekend day/night on-call per week:
      • When a CLA is on-call on Saturday, they are invited/required to attend student dinner in the cookhouse. The Saturday meal is pre-prepared by our Good Food Facilitator on Friday. The CLA on-call is asked to put the meal in the oven in advance of dinnertime. Note: there is no student dinner on Sundays.
      • On occasion, the on-call CLA will be asked to do a bit of set up work or an errand (approximately 1 hr) during weekend on-call shifts.
      • CLAs complete one stroll around campus as part of their evening on-call duties on weekends.
  • Assist with setup/breakdown before and after each program. This work is compensated at a rate of $20/hour. Generally includes 2 days of work before/after.
  • Join for as many of our special events as your schedule allows. For example: The Storysharing Dinner, The Foraged Feast, The Intergenerational Book Discussion, The Good Life Lecture. These are beautiful evenings of connection and community.
  • Attend weekly (or bi-weekly) meetings with the Director of Community Life.
  • Regular communication with senior staff: expectation of checking email daily and responding within 24 hours.

Optional (but Preferred) Responsibilities, which are compensated:

  • Assist with multi-day trips: for example, several CLAs are invited to assist senior staff in leading a 3-day student trip to Acadia National Park. CLAs are compensated at a rate of $160/day for trip support.
  • Lead or assist with non-weekend day trips. Compensation varies.

Qualifications:

  • Love for experiential learning, working with college age students, and living in community.
  • Age 21+ with valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • CPR/First Aid certified. We will pay for your training.
  • Desire to live in shared housing on Mill Island for the duration of the position.

Perks:

  • Private bedroom in a shared waterfront home with a dock, kayaks, screened porch, firepit, woodstove, laundry, and full kitchen (to be clear, in addition to the woodstove the house has a furnace and heat pump).
  • Unparalleled river views — bald eagles, seals, and sunsets over the Back River, just steps from your door
  • Flexible schedule + opportunity to engage in our unique immersive programs that integrate philosophy, poetry, art, nature immersion, mindfulness, and community building.
  • Delicious meals in our cookhouse during on-call nights.
  • Community and Connection to an inspired and supportive team
