Assistant Professor/Associate Professor of Writing

The Writing Program of Columbia University School of the Arts seeks to fill a tenure or tenure-track position in the field of Fiction. We seek a candidate at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor without tenure or Associate Professor with tenure effective July 1, 2025. The Program offers the MFA in Writing and an undergraduate major in Creative Writing.  

 

The Writing Program aims to attract a dynamic and dedicated fiction writer with a significant publication history and a strong commitment to the teaching of writers. There is no preferred style or genre; we seek a candidate with an adventurous intellectual spirit with expertise also in literary history. Graduate and undergraduate teaching experience is preferred, but commensurate experience in the field will be considered as well. A commitment to serve on committees and to fill a variety of leadership roles that rotate among the faculty is required.

 

Candidates for the Assistant Professor/Associate Professor of Writing (tenure-track) must show promise of the capacity for creative work and the accompanying pedagogy qualifying them for future nomination to tenure. 

 

Candidates with the rank of Associate Professor (tenured position) must have a record of excellence in teaching and be widely recognized for their distinction and professional accomplishment and demonstrate promise of attaining further distinction. 

 

The teaching load is four courses/year, two each semester. These typically include graduate writing workshops, seminars or lectures and, based on needs, advanced undergraduate creative writing courses. Co-curricular programming and advising, as well as administrative and leadership roles, rotate among faculty, and will be required of the successful candidate.

Columbia University School of the Arts offers Masters of Fine Arts degrees in four disciplines: Film, Theatre, Visual Arts, and Writing, as well as a Masters of Arts and related undergraduate programs.

 

Salary Range or Pay Grade

Assistant Professor (tenure-track): $90,000-$115,000 

Associate Professor (tenure-track): $115,000-$135,000 

Associate Professor (tenured): $135,000-$175,000

 

Rank and salary commensurate with experience.

 

Qualifications

Minimum Degree Required: BA or equivalent

Preferred Degree: Master of Fine Arts or equivalent
