Western Connecticut State University

Assistant Professor of Professional Writing

As the Department of Creative and Professional Writing prepares to update its undergraduate degree offerings in Creative Writing, Business and Technical Writing, and Journalism and Public Relations, we seek a colleague who can contribute vision and experience in Professional Writing and contribute occasionally to our low-residency Master of Fine Arts in Creative and Professional Writing, one of the most successful graduate programs at the university. Additional information about the department, including a full list of our current course offerings, may be found at www.wcsu.edu/writing. Information on the University may be found at www.wcsu.edu.

Position Summary: Teaching responsibilities will include a variety of Professional Writing courses, with priority on Managerial Writing and Technical Writing courses. Our new colleague will build interest and enrollment in the Business and Technical Writing Option; will teach occasionally in the department’s Writers’ Studio sequence; may teach courses in Public Relations, Advertising, Science Writing, and a variety of other courses in the department; will contribute to departmental discussions about possible online course/degree delivery; and may have opportunities to work with students in the MFA program. Faculty carry 12 faculty workload credits per semester but may apply for course release time for research. All tenure-track faculty currently may apply for $1,200 per year for travel to conferences and may apply for release time for research, for research grants of up to $5,000, and for faculty development grants.

Qualifications: Must possess either a terminal degree (such as PhD, MFA, JD, EdD, or MBA) or Master's degree with substantial professional experience in Business or Technical Communications. Must have recent teaching experience at the undergraduate level. ABD will be considered with substantial professional experience. This position requires versatility and ability to teach a wide variety of courses.

Preference will be given to candidates with recent work experience in Business Communications and/or Technical Writing (freelance work is acceptable). Experience in Public Relations or Advertising is attractive but not required. Demonstrated ability to teach courses such as Multimedia Writing, Legal Writing, Magazine Editing, or Modern English Grammar is a plus but not required. Evidence of work experience in Business/Technical Writing is required and is more important than publications, though we would like to see evidence of professional engagement through publications, conferences, or other activities as well.

A candidate who does not meet the above standards may also be appointed provided the candidate has credentials and/or experience substantially comparable to the above experience. WCSU is particularly interested in applicants who have experience working with students from different backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for first-generation and under-represented groups. The successful candidate is expected to value and encourage all forms of diversity, including neurodiversity.
