Joanne DeTore

Joanne L. DeTore is a Gen X poet whose work explores the space where mixtapes meet Spotify, Goodnight Moon meets Google, and everyday life reveals its extraordinary depths. Her poems examine identity, family, memory, and transformation, finding moments of humor, grace, and resilience at the intersection of personal experience and cultural change.

Her poetry has appeared in Red Fern Review, Beyond Words, Voices in Italian Americana, and many others. She was a finalist for the Edwin Markham Prize for Poetry from Reed Magazine. She is the recipient of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Mentor of the Year Award and the Veteran's Faculty Champion Award. An Associate Professor of Humanities and Communication, she has spent more than two decades helping students discover the power of stories while continuing to write her own. She is currently working on her latest collection of poems, chronicling the unexpected gifts and booby prizes of breast cancer survivorship. She lives in Florida, where barred owls, thunderstorms, and love bugs often find their way into her poems.
