The 21st annual Postgraduate Writers’ Conference was held from August 8 to August 14 on the Vermont College of Fine Arts campus in Montpelier. The conference, designed for writers with graduate degrees or equivalent experience, featured workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as readings, craft classes, and individual consultations with faculty members. Each workshop was limited to five or six participants. The faculty included poets Eduardo C. Corral, Kathleen Graber, Patricia Smith, David Wojahn, and Kevin Young; fiction writers Steve Almond, Andre Dubus III, Ann Hood, Ellen Lesser, and Lee Martin; and creative nonfiction writers Richard McCann, Sue William Silverman, Anthony Swofford, and Joan Wickersham. Tuition was $985 for all workshops except for the poetry manuscript workshop, which was $1,125. The cost for on-campus housing was $370 for a single room, or $200 for a shared room. The full conference meal plan was $208. Scholarships were available; writers submitted a five-page writing sample and a letter explaining need. Applications were accepted on a rolling basis.
