The 23rd annual Postgraduate Writers’ Conference was held from August 13 to August 19 on the Vermont College of Fine Arts campus in Montpelier. The conference, designed for writers with graduate degrees or equivalent experience, featured workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as readings, craft classes, and individual consultations with faculty members. Each workshop was limited to five or six participants. The faculty included poets Matthew Dickman, Kathleen Graber, Jamaal May, Patricia Smith, and David Wojahn; fiction writers Andre Dubus III, Ann Hood, Ellen Lesser, Lee Martin, and Ana Menéndez; and creative nonfiction writers Richard McCann, Kyoko Mori, Sue William Silverman, and Anthony Swofford. Tuition was $995 for all workshops except for the poetry manuscript workshop, which was $1,175. The cost for on-campus housing was $370 for a single room or $200 for a shared room. The full conference meal plan was $215. Scholarships were available; writers submitted a five-page writing sample and a letter explaining need. Applications were accepted on a rolling basis.
