The program is fully-funded. All students receive teaching assistantships in both creative writing and freshman composition. In addition to their teaching stipends, all students receive complete tuition remission plus scholarships.

Admission alternates between genres. Persons wishing to write poetry should apply in even-numbered years. Persons wishing to write fiction should apply in odd-numbered years. UW-Madison’s English Department permits its PhD students the opportunity to request a minor in creative writing. The program does not offer a PhD in creative writing.

For the 2017–2018 year, the program will accept poetry students.
