The 16th annual Under the Volcano Master Classes and Residency was held from January 10, 2019, to January 20, 2019, in Tepoztlán, Mexico, a traditional village located in the foothills of volcanoes approximately one hour from Mexico City. The conference featured daily workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as readings, manuscript consultations, excursions, time to write, and an optional two-week residency extension. The faculty included poets David Huerta and Robin Coste Lewis; fiction writers Magda Bogin and Sabina Murray; nonfiction writers David Barstow, Elizabeth Rosner, and Alejandra Xanic; and editor Jonathan Levi. Guest authors included fiction writers Sandra Cisneros and Luisa Valenzuela. Tuition was $1,995, which included most meals. The cost of the residency extension was $500. Housing ranged from $25 per night for tent camping to $250 per night for a private room. Limited need-based financial aid was available. Writers submitted a writing sample of 8 to 10 pages and a cover letter. There was no application fee. Admissions were made on a rolling basis. Visit the website for complete guidelines.
