The program offers partial funding for all full-time, in-state and out-of-state students, and full funding for some in-state students. Students receive funding through graduate assistantships connected to for-credit teaching internships, through graduate teaching assistantships, research fellowships, and adjunct teaching. The university requires a separate application for a student to be considered for a graduate teaching assistantship (see website). Connecticut residents sixty-two and older may attend for free, and students already holding a relevant master's degree may take a reduced curriculum.
The program prioritizes community and workshops with a focus on collaboration. It also works to help students get published. Its literature and theory professors are dedicated to teaching as much as to scholarship and publication. It also has a thriving Visiting Writers and Editors Series and often bring back graduates to read from their new books.
The program duration is two years, with an optional third year to work on thesis at no added cost.
The application deadlines for financial aid consideration are March 1 for fall and November 1 for spring.
