An earlier collection is A Child Turns Back to Wave: Poetry of Lost Places (Hollywood, CA: The Poetry Press, 2012) which won the Prize Americana from the Institute for the Study of American Popular Culture. Charlotte Muse writes: “Peter Neil Carroll, poet and historian, has gone to see America for himself. He has traveled through desolate, mysterious western places full of the spirit of vanished peoples, and gone watching, remembering, and bring us back the gift of these poems…. These are the lively poems, though love and sorrow are never far from the surface, as in the unforgettable last lines from “The Mountain Top”: An earlier volume is Riverborne: A Mississippi Requiem (Higganum Hill, CT: Higganum Hill Books, 2008). These poems describe a latter-day Huck and Jim journey down the great river. Among recently published poems on line: “Appalachia” “Restless Spring” “Epitaph” & “Solstice”: Peter reads frequently in the San Francisco area and has spoken on the theme of poetry and place at Oberlin College and other poetry venues. His non-fiction books include Keeping Time: Memory Nostalgia & the Art of History (Georgia) The Odyssey of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade: Americans in the Spanish Civil War (Stanford) and It Seemed Like Nothing Happened: America in the 1970s (Rutgers) He lives with the writer-photographer Jeannette Ferrary.
