MacDowell offers residencies of up to six weeks year-round to poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators on 450 acres near Mt. Monadnock in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Residents are provided with a private studio and work space, as well as three daily chef-prepared meals and access to the James Baldwin Library. Stipends and travel reimbursement grants are available based on financial need. To apply for residencies from March 2026 through August 2026, submit 6 to 10 poems (totaling no more than 15 pages) or 15 to 20 pages of prose and a project proposal with a $30 application fee from August 15 to September 10. Following these guidelines, translators may submit a writing sample of poetry or prose in English along with the matching selection in the original language.
