Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor of Kenya won the 2003 Caine Prize for African writing for her short story "Weight of Whispers." She received £9,000 (approximately $15,000). The judges were Abdulrazak Gurnah, Shirley Chew, John Sutherland, and Nana Wilson-Tagoe.

It is the second year in a row that a Kenyan writer has won the award (Binyavanga Wainaina won last year for "Discovering Home").

The annual prize is given for the best short story published in English by an African writer whose work reflects African sensibilities.
