The Guardian, the British newspaper founded in 1821, recently compiled a list of the top fifty film adaptations of books. Andrew Pulver, the Guardian's film editor, was one of a group of nominators who came up with the list, which will be published in the May 5 edition of the newspaper. The public will then be invited to vote for the best film adapation of all time, and the winner will be announced at the Guardian Hay literary festival at the end of May.

Among the top fifty are 1984, Alice in Wonderland, American Psycho, Breakfast at Tiffany's, A Clockwork Orange, The English Patient, Fight Club, The Godfather, The Jungle Book, LA Confidential, Lolita, Pride and Prejudice, and To Kill a Mockingbird.
