Red Emma's is dedicated to putting principles of solidarity and sustainability into practice in a democratic workplace. We host a variety of talks, panels, readings, workshops, and screenings in our space, almost all are entirely free to attend.

Kramerbooks & Afterwords opened in 1976 and is the first bookstore/cafe in Washington, D.C. The shop has a good stock of LGBT and local literature, as well as a healthy general selection, and is open twenty-four hours on Fridays and Saturdays. Events include author signings and readings.

The Segue Foundation hosts the experimental reading series Segue at Zinc, a continuation of the legendary series that has run for over twenty-five years. Readings feature contemporary poets and writers and take place on Saturday afternoons at 4:30PM at the Zinc Bar.

Mercury Café

The Mercury Cafe is powered by the Wind and the Sun. We serve Local, Organic Food, and Community is our purpose. We are a three ring circus with Music, Dance, Theater & Poetry. In the Rose Dining Room you can expect quiet beautiful Jazz & Classical Musicians. In the Jungle Dining Room you will find song with Concerts, Community Theater, Flamenco, Opera, Poetry, Films, and later in the evening, up and coming Indie music Bands.

KGB Bar

In the 1940s, the space currently occupied by KGB Bar was a Ukranian socialist club. KGB opened in 1993 as a Soviet-era themed bar, and it remains a well-known literary venue. The bar hosts fiction and poetry readings most nights of the week, and admission is free.
