We explore the pulse and voice of the Heartland through the use of the literary arts. How can we best live in Midwest. From fiction and fact, to journalism to poetry.

We recognize we are one of very few presses with a focus on the Midwest. We prefer authors that are patient and have realistic expectations. Publishing now requires authors to be more involved in publicity than ever before. You must be comfortable with promotions.

Mayapple Press is a small literary press founded in 1978 by poet and editor Judith Kerman. We focus on literature not often celebrated by either the mainstream or the avant-garde. This includes poetry which is both challenging and accessible; women’s writing; Great Lakes/Northeast literature; the immigrant experience; science fiction poetry; Jewish literature; and poetry in translation.

We ONLY accept unsolicited submissions during our open periods, which are generally in summer but not every year. Please watch our Submissions page for open periods, and then submit using Submishmash, our online submissions program. Please do not submit except during open periods. We do not accept hard-copy or email submissions, although email queries are fine.
