Don’t just read, but read widely. Your fellow writers’ works are your classroom, and reading across genres can be extremely informative. Dip into a poetry collection for a masterclass in lyricism and concision. Turn to a science fiction or fantasy novel for guidance on balancing world-building with plot advancement. A gripping thriller or mystery can show you how to establish stakes effectively. Graphic novels can provide unexpected insight on how to set a scene. (Where do you want to draw the reader’s eye first?) And if you’re looking for inspiration for a speculative concept, turn to history—memoirs, biographies, serious nonfiction.
