Despite having neither aptitude nor affinity for running, I think of a book’s path to reaching the public as a relay race. The writer brings the manuscript as far as they possibly can, the agent takes up the baton and brings it that much farther, and finally the editor (and everyone in-house at the publisher) shepherds the book across the finish line, which is, of course, just the start of the book’s life in the world. Book publishing is a team sport! This work requires stamina and trust on every leg, and it also requires rigorous preparation. For the writer’s part, that starts with a wonderful, original project, and it includes reading widely, editing thoroughly, tapping your community of writers for support, and understanding what makes your book uniquely necessary in the current market. To cross the finish line, there must be a common vision for success and a confidence in the team—you’ve trained for this, so bring your very best, and be ready to hand the baton to others who will do the same.
