Poets & Writers Invites Debut Poets to Apply for Free Publicity Incubator

New York, NY – January 17, 2023 – Poets & Writers, the nation’s leading nonprofit organization serving creative writers, invites poets with forthcoming collections to apply for Get the Word Out, a publicity incubator for debut authors. Poets who have a debut collection slated for publication between April 2023 and April 2024 are eligible to apply.

This unique professional development program will provide expert advice and peer support to a select group of authors, each preparing for the publication of their first book. Under the mentorship of an accomplished book publicist, participants will develop and execute a strategic marketing plan to maximize the exposure of their books and propel their literary careers. Up to ten poets will be selected for the spring 2023 cohort. There is no application fee and no cost to those invited to participate.

In keeping with Poets & Writers’ vision to empower writers nationwide, especially those from historically marginalized communities, the selection process will prioritize applications from writers who identify as BIPOC, writers with disabilities, LGBTQ+ writers, writers from outside of New York City, writers who do not have an MFA or equivalent degree, and those whose books are to be published by independent presses. The application deadline is February 3; selected writers will be announced in March.

Get the Word Out is supported, in part, by generous gifts from Leonard & Louise Riggio and Macmillan Publishers.

More information about Get the Word Out, including application guidelines, is available here.

Writers, publishers, agents, editors, and book publicists who wish to learn more about Get the Word Out are invited to contact Thierry Kehou, Poets & Writers’ director of programs and partnerships, at tkehou@pw.org.
