Artful Dodge Artful Dodge has always been attracted to writing with a sense of place and cultural landscape. Besides new American fiction, poetry and narrative essay, we’re also interested in contemporary literature in translation from all over the globe. In fact, since 1990 we have run a special “Poets as Translators” section in each issue, in which prominent and emerging American poets present both their own poetry and translation work side by side. Artichoke Haircut Artichoke Haircut was created not to reaffirm the editors pre-existing aesthetic prejudices, just the opposite. We were bored of much of the contemporary literature we had been reading and much of what had been force-fed to us by larger literary publications. We wanted to be surprised and we wanted to publish a magazine that would surprise our readers. For that reason, we strive to publish the best work from around the country by up-and-coming writers who have yet to have their voices heard by a large audience.
