The program can be completed in three to four years. All students are guaranteed support for a fourth year of study; many take advantage of this option in order to have a year of intensive focus on the thesis project and to gain additional teaching experience. The preferred application deadline is December 1, however one may apply after that.

The program hosts the Bankhead Visiting Writers Series and the Coal Royalty Chairholders teaching residencies. Students have the opportunity to teach in correctional facilities through the Alabama Prison Arts & Education Program, and in secondary schools through the Writers in the Schools Program and the UA Young Writers Camp.
