My new novel, The Powers, featuring Joe DiMaggio, Dorothy Day, and Walker Evans, is composed in parallel narratives of prose and photography. I'm interested in the way artists act (or don't act) as moral witnesses, and how they formalize their responses to what Susan Sontag calls "the suffering of others." Five previous novels have recently been reissued by Northwestern University Press.
