Maureen holds an MA and a MFA in Creative Writing (poetry/playwriting) from San Francisco State University. As a graduate exchange student at UC Berkeley's Celtic Studies Department, she studied Celtic anthropology, folklore and literature with professors Dundes, Tracy and Melia, and translated Celtic Medieval Irish and Welsh manuscripts with professors Hollander and Klar. She has a BA in Art Studio (Expressive Arts minor) from Sonoma State University & an AA in Art Studio (Theater minor) from College of Marin.

Maureen Hurley teaches poetry and art to kids of all ages in Northern California schools. Maureen coached 2010 Poetry Out Loud statewide winner (3rd place); and served as a POL judge. Maureen has also taught creative arts classes to teachers, artists, prisoners, Elderhostel, and memoir classes to senior citizens in retirement homes.

Maureen’s photographs, poems, translations and essays have been anthologized in hundreds of international magazines and periodicals.

Maureen has given readings in California, Montana Massachusetts and Florida. She has also given readings at Rotterdam’s Poetry International Festival, and at the Cherkassy Library in the Ukraine, where she translated Russian poetry with Oleg Atbashian.

Maureen performed her poetry & music collaboration with Unconservatory pianist duo Kirk Whipple and Marilyn Morales at several venues for Cranberry Coast Concerts III in MA during the summer of 2008.

She received a 2008-09 Oakland Cultural Arts Council artist in residency (AIR) grant, and was awarded two KQED SPARK AIR grants (art).
She was recipient of seven California Arts Council Artist in Residency in poetry/art for Sonoma County schools, and an Artists in Libraries grant at Napa State Hospital; she received two literature fellowships from the Community Foundation of Sonoma County. She has won numerous awards for her poetry including the Chester H Jones Poetry Prize, and a Pushcart nomination.
