Zimbabwean Writer Wins Fifth Annual Caine Prize [1]

Brian Chikwava, a fiction writer who was born in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, won the 2004 Caine Prize for African writing for his story "Seventh Street Alchemy." He received £8,300 (approximately $15,000).

Other writers shortlisted for the fifth annual Caine Prize were Doreen Baingana and Monica Arac de Nyeko, both from Uganda; Parselelo Kantai from Kenya; and Chika Unigwe from Nigeria.

The annual prize is given for the best short story published in English by an African writer whose work reflects African sensibilities.
