Emily Vizzo is a writer and educator. She previously covered Congress for the Scripps Howard News Service in Washington, D.C., and has written about topics including the biotech industry, corporate social justice, surf, the arts, education, business, and health. Her essay, "A Personal History of Dirt," was noted in Best American Essays. Emily's first book of poetry, Giantess, is available from YesYes Books, and she has a novel in progress. Her work appears in the Los Angeles Times, Best New Poets, FIELD, Ninth Letter, and many other publications.

 

Emily actively volunteers to support environmental protections for California’s Central Coast, and served as Artist in Residence for the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis, an independent research affiliate of the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2018, with the support of a University of California Coastal Fund grant, she established a yearlong outdoor writing series along the Gaviota Coast, connecting scientists, writers, and community members in free, public workshops. Emily Vizzo is a National Geographic Educator and belongs to the Executive Committee for the Surfrider Foundation Santa Barbara Chapter. Other volunteer commitments have included VIDA, Poetry International, and Writers Resist Los Angeles. Emily is currently translating poems from Italian.
