Bio: 

I was born in Belle Fourche, South Dakota, raised in South Dakota and Washington, and educated at Pomona College and the University of Oregon. I worked in fire control for the U. S. Forest Service in California and Oregon, served as managing partner for a small logging and lumber company, and have taught at colleges in Oregon and Texas. I am distinguished professor emeritus at Texas State University, where I was founding director of the MFA program
