Roberta Beary they/she, identifies as gender-fluid, and writes to connect with other trauma survivors. Their prose poem 'After You Self Medicate with Roethke's The Waking Read by Text to Speech App' won the Bridport Prize. Their work appears in The New York Times, Rattle, MacQueen's Quinterly, 100 Word Story, Litro Magazine, Atticus Review, and other publications. Crazy Bitches, their first full-length haibun collection, (MacQ, 2025) contains 80 haibun written from 2004 to 2024, along with artwork by their brother, Kevin Beary. Her short poem collection, The Unworn Necklace, received multiple prizes and was a finalist for the Poetry Society of America book award, a first for a book of haiku. Her prose poem collection, Deflection, was named a National Poetry Month Best Pick by Washington Independent Review of Books. Beary co-edited Wishbone Moon, international anthology of haiku by women, published by Jacar Press. Their most recent haiku collection, Carousel, won the Snapshot Press Book Award and was named a Touchstone Book Award finalist (2025). Their collaborative work, One Breath: The Reluctant Engagement Project, which pairs their writings with artwork by people with disabilities and their families, was named a DaVinci Eye/Eric Hoffer Award finalist and was shortlisted for a Touchstone Book Award. They are co-author of the haibun how-to book: Haibun A Writer's Guide, (Ad Hoc Fiction, 2023), winner of the Haiku Society of America Merit Book Award. Beary is the longtime haibun editor at Modern Haiku.
